I first threw this little ditty together back in 2019, when I still used Better Half as my non-dairy milk of choice. Since then I have seen the light and converted to Oatly (full fat, not the barista blend, if you’re wondering). Also, my Zojirushi (which is still a fantastic drip brewer) has retired to the cabinet, and I now use a Chemex pour-over with a reusable copper filter.
But in honor of everyone gathering near and far around the Thanksgiving tables this week, I thought I would post this from-the-heart celebration of what really matters on such a special day.
To the tune of “The Christmas Song” (aka “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire”):
Thanksgiving Ode to Coffee
Chestnuts roasting in an open box
On the kitchen counter, "shelled and ready to eat.“
Coffee brewing right beside them in the pot,
Soon joined with Oatly and Stevia, so sweet.
Everybody greets their beverage, in their mug of choice.
Oh, that first whiff, first sip… eyes all aglow!
Heartfelt Thanksgiving shown in face and in voice
For this miracle of hot, roasted Joe.
We know the Turkey’s on his way,
Bringing soporific triptophan in his wake,
And every mother’s child is gonna ask,
"Why didn’t we go with a nice lamb, fed on grass?“
Even so, I’m offering this simple wish
To coffee conoisseurs, both great and small.
Turkey, lamb, brisket, ham — no matter what your chosen dish:
A Coffee Thanksgiving to all!
